The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) has proclaimed October 4 to 10, 2026, as Fire Prevention Week with the theme, Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower. The campaign focuses on helping families and students safely use and charge devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, including phones, tablets, laptops, toys, e-bikes and scooters.
Lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday life, but when damaged or charged improperly, they can overheat and cause fires. Fire Prevention Week encourages everyone to use manufacturer-approved chargers, charge devices on hard, flat surfaces, unplug devices when fully charged and stop using batteries that become excessively hot, swell, smoke or emit unusual odours.
SPSA encourages schools to take part in Fire Prevention Week activities and help students learn how simple charging habits can help keep homes, classrooms and communities safe.
