Saints at National Skills Competition Print E-mail
national skills competition 2The Skills Canada National Competition remains the only event of its kind in Canada.  It is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for young students and apprentices in the country.  Every year, the event brings together approximately 500 young people from all regions of Canada, along with their parents and teachers to compete in over 40 trade and technology areas.
On May 13-16, Anthony Fetsch and Brandon Parfitt competed at the 18th Skills Canada National Competition in Edmonton, AB.  The competition was held at the Expo Centre.  The two boys were a team competing in the 3D Animation event.  The Saints team advanced to the national competition after winning the gold medal at the provincial competition on March 15-16 in Regina.
Anthony and Brandon were given the theme of, "I am not going there" at the competition.  Using that theme, they were to create a story-board displaying that theme, create characters and produce a 3D animation video showcasing their talents.  They had two days of competition to produce a high caliber video which was then judged by professional animators.
National Skills Competition 1The Saints team chose to create a video where a person walks up to two doors and has to make a choice.  The first option, the person opens the door and he is getting sucked into outer space.  The person pulls himself back and closes the door.  He then proceeds to the second door, opens it and it is a beautiful meadow with the sun shining down and a butterfly gracefully crossing the person.  He sees a flower, walks toward it and goes to pick it up as it quickly shrinks and closes up.  The humour behind the animation was that both doors were not a good place to go.  Anthony and Brandon did an excellent job creating characters and making an animation.  Although they did not medal at the competition, their video was definitely a contender against the other provincial teams.

AMPO 40- May 28 to June 1, 2012 Print E-mail
ampo.3A Proud Catholic Schools' Tradition Reaches a 40 Year Milestone!
No desks, textbooks, computers, or math manipulatives for an entire week?  Being outdoors canoeing, using GPS units, and learning first aid skills with over one hundred other children?  For most students, this would sound like the beginning of July.  However, for the past 40 years, these are just a few of the exciting activities the grade seven students of Christ the Teacher's Yorkton and Theodore elementary schools experience at the outdoor education program known as AMPO.
In 1972, a visionary group of teachers and principals embarked upon plans to take their senior students on a weeklong outdoor education program at St. Michael's Camp at Duck Mountain Provincial Park.  During the final week of May, students from St. Alphonsus, St. Mary's, St. Michael's, and St. Paul's Schools (AMP, followed by "O" for outdoors) as well as dedicated staff and parent volunteers, have made this trek ever since.  St. Theodore School has often been a part of this tradition as well.  Archery, wilderness survival, fire building, and orienteering are among the many activities the students enjoy.  Being a part of God's "outdoor classroom" is a unique opportunity for the children to discover new skills, make new friends, and share in the joy of creation.
To run a program of this magnitude for one year is impresssive.  For AMPO to be thriving in its 40th year is something to take great pride in.  Of course, besides the teachers and students at camp, there are many others to whom we owe our gratitude.  Each year we rely on our parent volunteers to help make sure camp runs smoothly while the students are active in programs.  As well, the financial contributions from many groups are crucial to our program, including those from the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood, the Knights of Columbus #5182 and #2031, the CWL and the UCWL, the Kinsmen, the Painted Hand Casino, and the Saskatchewan Outdoor Education Association.  AMPO is a program that the Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division is very proud of.  If you have ever been involved with AMPO and would like to visit the camp this year, please join us on Wednesday, May 30th at 6:00 p.m. to witness the students participating in the AMPO Challenge.  Perhaps seeing the familiar camp area will bring back fond AMPO memories from your own experiences.ampo.1
ampo.2We are extremely grateful for AMPO thus far, and we look forward to at least another 40 years of this incredible program.
