Overview
  • The Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) and Advanced Placement (AP) Program is an internationally recognized program that offers an acceleration of learning and greater chhallenge to academically talented and/or motivated students as it prepares for the transition from high school to university.
  • Through college-level AP courses, students enter a universe of knowledge that might otherwise remain unexplored in high school.  Through AP exams, students at Sacred Heart have the opportunity to earn credit or advance standing at most of the nation's colleges and universities.
  • The AP program began in 1955 in the United States and is offered in over 80 countries worldwide.
  • In 2005, 2.1 million exams were administered world wide.
  • Students successfully completing AP examinations, offered by the College Board in May, can qualify for university credit or become exempt for introductory university courses, permitting them to move more quickly into advanced classes.

What are the acceptance criteria for Pre-AP & AP Classes?
  • Students should generally have a mark of at least 80% in the related course.
  • Students must have parental permission.
  • A current teacher is asked to complete a recommendation form and submit the form directly to
  • the selection committee.
  • Students considering Pre-AP or AP courses should possess the following characteristics: excellent study skills; an ability to handle increased homework expectations (both in amount and intensity); a history of completing and submitting homework on time; an ability to work well independently and to be self-directed; strong organizational skills; persistence in pursuing goals; a strong sense of responsibility; and an ability to work well with others.
What are the Pre-AP and AP courses are offered in each grade?
  • Grade 9 - Pre-AP English Language Arts 9, Pre-AP Math 9 & 10
  • Grade 10 - Pre-AP English Language Arts A10 & B10 and Pre-AP Math 20 & A30
  • Grade 11 - Pre-AP English Language Arts 20 & A30 and Pre-AP Math B30 & C30
  • Grade 12 - Pre-AP English Language Arts B30, Pre-AP Calculus 30, AP Challenge Exams in French Language, English Literature and Composition, and Calculus AB
Would my daughter or son have to take Pre-AP classes in English Language Arts and Math?
No. A student may choose to only enroll in one of the courses.
Who teaches the Pre-AP & AP courses?
Pre-AP and AP Teachers have a strong academic background in the subject area, an interest in challenging students, an enthusiasm for teaching and have received Pre-AP or AP training.
